In Memoriam, Professor Alenka Luzar

March 5, 2019

Professor Luzar, who joined the VCU Chemistry Department in 2004, passed away March 5th, 2019. Dr. Luzar taught Physical Chemistry Graduate and Undergraduate courses at VCU. She will be missed by her students and colleagues at VCU.

Dr. Luzar was as a world leader in theoretical chemistry and computational statistical mechanics. Her pioneering contributions to our basic understanding of the nature of hydrogen bonds in water have shaped the field of chemical dynamics. Her track record of consistent excellence and innovation in research - indeed in all aspects of academic life - was extraordinary, and she was an inspiration to her colleagues and her students alike. Dr. Luzar was the Chair of the Gordon Research Conference on Water and Aqueous solutions in July 2018. She was also the Editor-in-Chief for the Journal of Molecular Liquids (Elsevier) since 2016. She was honored with the VCU College of Humanities and Sciences Distinguished Scholar Award in 2012. She was an Elected Fellow in the American Physical Society (APS) in 2008, the American Association of Advancement of Science (AAAS) in 2010 and the Royal Society of Chemistry in 2017.
