2017 Chemistry Graduation Ceremony

The VCU Department of Chemistry's Graduation Ceremony will take place Friday, May 12th, 6:00 PM at the Greater Richmond Convention Center - Exhibit Hall C.

We are honored to have Dr. Amy Rose, a surgeon with Surgical Associates of Richmond on Richmond’s southside and a Chemistry alumni speak at graduation. Amy T. Rose, MD, is an advanced minimally invasive surgeon with Surgical Associates of Richmond on Richmond’s southside.  She was a 1990 graduate of VCU with a degree in Chemistry, having worked closely with Dr. Lidia Vallarino during her undergraduate years, after growing up in Spotsylvania County.  She was a participant in the young Honor’s Program and one of the first participants in the Early Acceptance Program to the medical college of VCU.

Because of her experiences at VCU as an undergraduate, she was able to make the decision to alter her medical path and decided to attend Vanderbilt University Medical School for both medical school and her general surgery residency.  There she met her husband, Dr. D. Michael Rose, a surgical oncologist also with Surgical Associates.  Her experiences were further broadened by an internship at the State University of New York – Stony Brook and research at UCLA on Peptide YY and its role in pancreatic cancer.

She then spent four years in Biloxi, Mississippi, in private solo practice while her husband fulfilled his military obligation at Keeler AF base, before returning to Virginia to join her current practice.  She currently performs advanced GI and abdominal wall laparoscopy and has been recognized as one of Richmond’s “Top Docs” by her colleagues through Richmond Magazine every year since 2010.

In her time outside of the hospital, Dr. Rose enjoys spending time with her rescue dogs, cooking, and traveling.  She particularly enjoys visiting France and tries to continue intellectual exercise with improving her fluency in the French language and understanding of French history.  She is both honored and excited to be participating in this year’s graduation of the Chemistry Department of her alma mater.
