Real-World Learning

The Department of Chemistry offers undergraduate students a variety of ways to engage practically in their major.

Through undergraduate research in one of our many research-active labs, internships with the Richmond chemistry community, or our student and faculty collaborative mentorship program, you'll gain hands-on experience in a variety of chemistry disciplines.

Undergraduate Research

Students can gain hands-on experience in one of our many research-active labs with faculty members and their graduate students through CHEM 392 (Directed Study) or CHEM 492 (Independent Study), and earn academic credit that counts towards their degrees while they do so.

Internships

Students will collaborate and engage in an off-campus chemistry internship within the chemistry community to earn academic credits through CHEM 493 (Chemistry Internship) that contribute toward their degree. This opportunity enables them to acquire invaluable hands-on skills, preparing them for their future post graduation.

Mentor Program

Students have the opportunity to collaborate with and learn from one of our chemistry faculty mentors. This faculty-student peer mentoring group connects students with faculty members for one-on-one guidance and support.

The chemistry department holds weekly events including research spotlights on labs located here and on the medical campus, our graduate lecture series and larger networking events. Check out our events page for more information.
