Xuewei Wang, Ph.D., in the Department of Chemistry was recently awarded a grant from an industry sponsor, Calcilytix, for $226,117. For his project, Wang and his team will develop a portable chemical sensor that empowers patients to monitor their blood electrolytes without going to the hospital. The at-home monitor is critical for managing chronic diseases such as hypoparathyroidism.

Calcilytix is a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company focused on developing a targeted therapy for disorders of calcium homeostasis, like hypoparathyroidism and autosomal dominant hypocalcemia type 1 (ADH1). Their product candidate, encaleret, is an investigational orally-administered small molecule designed to specifically inhibit the calcium-sensing receptor, hypothesized to restore normal serum calcium and lower urine calcium
